Some info for those considering jiu-jitsu

If you are new to jiu-jitsu, we realize walking in to your first class can be an intimidating experience for some. You see students rolling around on the mats looking intense, trying to submit one another, and you may be wondering if this is even something you’re ready to do.

We understand this. Nearly everyone has this feeling the first time they set foot in a jiu-jitsu academy, but we promise, if you take a closer look you’re going to see just as much laughing, camaraderie, and fun. That’s what it’s all about!

Your first visit:

The first time you come by you can decide what you’d like to do!

If you are trepidatious about hitting the mats, you can drop by and observe a class. You can simply watch, or feel free to ask questions, meet the professor and coaches, and get a feel for what jiu-jitsu is all about.

If you are the type that likes to jump right into things, or already have experience training BJJ, come by a class about 15-20 min early. You’ll need to fill out some forms and get some basic info before class starts, then we’ll get you started!

Here are some questions new students often have:

Do I need my own gi?

For your trial classes, you can borrow one of our clean loaner-gis. After you signup, you’ll need to purchase a gi from us, or you can purchase a patch and have it sewn on to a gi you purchased on your own.

What should I bring to my first class?

  • Water

  • Flip-flops or sandals

  • A comfortable rashguard or t-shirt under your gi. If you are coming for a “no gi” class, you’ll need comfortable shorts with no zippers, buttons, or pockets.

I have some previous injuries that I worry may prevent me from doing jiu-jitsu. Should I still try it?

Of course before you do anything, consult your doctor. Tell them you are considering trying jiu-jitsu, and ask for their advice. Jiu-jitsu is a low-impact sport, but like any physical activity, there is always risk of injury. The key to sparring when you have any physical issue is to be open about it, and tell your training partner before you roll.
